Let Hope Be Our Fuel

It’s a new year! All resolutions have been made and plans have been set into place to obtain our goals for the year. I love this time of year because it seems like hope is in the air. People, both believes and unbelievers, have in different ways taken time to reflect on the past. They have considered how they want to change, improve or just flat out do something new in 2017. Then the process begins of setting yourself on course to hopefully obtain that goal over the next 11 months of the year. The first few weeks everyone is talking about it, it’s in the air; the sound of hope!

I purposefully used the word HOPE in the last paragraph several times because this is the word ringing in my spirit for 2017. I don’t know about you but I hear it everywhere, talking to friends and colleagues, scrolling on Facebook newsfeed, in messages and in articles. HOPE is trying to make its way into the human heart and atmosphere that surrounds us. Let’s look at the word hope more closely:

Hope is defined in the Webster dictionary as; to cherish a desire with anticipation :  to want something to happen or be true, to desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment, to expect with confidence.

The greek word for Hope is “proelpizó”. It means, “I hope before, am the first to hope”. This is the same word used in Eph. 1:12 (NKJV) “…that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.” Wow! We as believers not only have the ability to hope, but to be a part of those who first hoped!

Listen to this verse in the Message Bible translation:

“It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone.”

Isn’t that what we are all doing in the New Year? Seeking to find out who we are and what we are living for? We are seeking to put all of our energy and resources into reaching that goal!

God is bringing us all to hope and when we arrive at that hope, let’s keep hoping, as the word implies! I want to be one who comes to hope sooner than later, I want to be first in line!

Let hope be our fuel, driving us forward and keeping us moving upward. Hope is what ignites us to action. Have you ever poured gasoline onto a fire pit before lighting that match? You want that fire, right from the very onset, to burst into flames! I see that gasoline as our hope! Let’s pour it onto the alter of our hearts and as the Holy Spirit sparks a flame, we will be ready to be set ablaze! Jesus, increase our hope in this season!

Phil. 3:12-14 (MSG) “I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. Friends, don’t get me wrong: By no means do I count myself an expert in all of this, but I’ve got my eye on the goal, where God is beckoning us onward—to Jesus. I’m off and running, and I’m not turning back.”

Ps. 33:18 (ESV) “Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, on those who hope in his steadfast love”.
