As One Voice

“We worship you Lord, as one voice, we lift up one song!” This is a powerful phrase that all of us have said and heard many times. But, have we ever stopped to consider the depth of what it fully means? For myself, I feel I will be delving into the meaning of “one voice” or the concept of unity for most of my life. Unity is something we talk about a lot as Christians and for a good reason. It was also something that the early church Fathers and Apostles focused attention on.

Paul exhorts the church in 1 Corinthians 1:10 to come into unity and to eliminate divisions: 10 I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

In Galatians 3:26-28 the concept of unity eradicates the class differences, race differences and gender differences to bring about unity:

26 So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

In John 17:23, Jesus calls for unity among the disciples as a demonstration that would cause the world to take notice:

23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them
even as you have loved me.

Unity is something that is very important to God. As we have been talking about Judah this whole year, we have touched on the issue of unity several times. I will be touching on it again this coming Sunday, as I feel it is critical for us to come to a higher level of unity together. God has a sound that he wants to come out of us. It’s a sound that will cause a kingdom eruption. There is a sound in all of us individually, but when we come together corporately as, “one voice” a dynamic known as “synergy” happens.

Synergy is a powerful thing. When synergy occurs, the sum total of what one entity can accomplish is exponentially increased as it comes into cooperation with another entity. In other words if “Bill” can lift 100 pounds and “Tracy” can lift 100 pounds each when they are alone, when they come together, they can lift much more than 200 pounds! This is because of the effect of synergy. It is one of the most powerful forces that there is.

The Bible also speaks of this effect. Deut. 32:30 speaks of one person being able to put 1,000 enemies to flight, but 2 people being able to put 10,000 to flight! There is a power of synergy that is expressed in the kingdom of God in the manifestation of unity. When we come together as, “one voice” there is a roar that goes up in the spirit no matter what it may sound like here on the earth. This is a season where the shout of victory is returning to the people of God. No longer are we going to settle for being defeated and devastated in any area. We are pursuing, overtaking and recovering all that the enemy
has stolen in the past season. We are arising as a Judah army that is going forth in great victory AS ONE! We cannot do it alone; we need one another.

In closing, let me say this- when we sing together it is one of the most powerful things we can do to produce unity. When we sing the same song in a corporate fashion, not only do our hearts and focus come into unity, but also, studies have shown that actually our very hearts start to beat in rhythm! www.npr.org released an article on July 10, 2013 about a study that was conducted on a choir that produced strong evidence of something extraordinary. The study showed that when the choir sang, their heart rates fell into a shared rhythm guided by the tempo of the song which they were singing. Amazing how God has made us and fashioned even our very bodies to mirror powerful spiritual realities.

As we come together week after week, in any form of gathering or fellowship, let us pursue love and unity from a pure heart. Unity demonstrated in and through the people of God is a force to be reckoned with in the earth. In fact, it cannot be stopped. You and I alone may be overcome or deceived, but together we cannot be defeated. Let’s go deep in our hearts and understanding of unity. God is in the midst of our cooperation and partnership.

As it says in Psalm 133:

1 How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! 2 It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. 3 It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.
